Project Overview

Parker Drilling provides drilling equipment & services to Exxon Neftegas Ltd., a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Corp. and operator of the Sakhalin I consortium. The Sakhalin Island ODOPTU Land Drilling Rig (ODPL) is located onshore Sakhalin Island north of Japan in the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East.

Environmental conditions on the Sakhalin Island are extremely challenging:

Ambient Temperature: -40 deg C to 25 deg C
Indoor Survival Temperature: -20 deg C to 25 deg C (-4 deg F to 77 deg F)
Wind Velocity (100 year – 1 hr): 32 m/s (71.6 mph)
Atmosphere: Salty and Corrosive
Humidity: 70% minimum; 87% maximum
Seismic: Seismically Active Area

Parker Drilling contracted IFS to supply drilling support modules designed “fit for purpose” and suitable for 20 years of drilling service in the rugged Sakhalin Island ODOPTU project.

Project Owner:
Exxon Neftegas Ltd.

For Use In:
Sakhalin Island ODOPTU Land Drilling Rig

The Challenge
IFS started supplying Exxon Neftegas Ltd. with Production Equipment designed for severe arctic environmental conditions starting with the Expro Gulf Ltd. Chayvo Early Production Facility in 2004. IFS supplied (2) natural gas driven crude oil shipping pumps, (1) Methanol Injection Package, & (1) Glycol storage & forwarding Package. All of these packages were installed in insulated High Cube ISO containers which were pier mounted at the site. Subsequently, IFS supplied (1) diesel transfer pump package and (4) firewater pumping packages, all in insulated buildings.

Parker Drilling & Exxon Neftegas Ltd. were looking for a competent “engineered to order” modular systems supplier who could meet the rigorous International Codes and Standards, Exxon Neftegas applicable codes/standards, local regulations, and meet the severe arctic environment conditions. Additionally, all equipment had to be certified for use in Zone 2 Hazardous Electrical Area as defined in regulations relating to electrical installations in the petroleum activities guidelines relating to Area Classification.

The IFS Solution
IFS’s engineering & design group went to work to supply the following “Engineered to Order” modules to support the Parker Drilling project:

Item Qty Description
1 1 Diesel Loading Container
2 1 Base Oil Loading Container
3 1 Diesel & Base Oil Transfer Station
4 1 Technical Water Container
5 3 Diesel Transfer Pumps, complete with electric motor and base frame (horizontal type)
6 4 Base Oil Transfer Pumps, complete with electric motor and base frame (horizontal type)
7 2 Technical Water Transfer Pumps, complete with electric motor and base frame (horizontal type)
8 Ea. Rigging and lift plans for all required equipment and containers
9 1 Loading and Transfer Station Office
10 1 List of Commissioning Spares
11 1 List of Operating Spares (2 years)
